When to choose Ivory instead of white, gray or black

Vallejo’s own Mecha Primer color chart lists White (70.640), Grey (70.641), Black (70.642), Ivory (70.643) and Sand (70.644). Ivory is useful when the planned finish benefits from a warmer pale undercoat rather than a stark white base. The primer color may affect the look of thin or translucent paint applied over it; test the full primer-and-paint combination on a spare part before finishing a visible model.

The 74.643 retail code used for this 200 mL listing should not be confused with the chart’s 70.643 shade notation or with ordinary Mecha Color topcoat shades. Compare the manufacturer family, shade, bottle size and label rather than choosing only by the word “ivory.”

Application and compatibility notes

Vallejo describes its Mecha range as water-based acrylic airbrush products engineered to adhere to plastic and other model surfaces while preserving fine details. Its Mecha Primer instructions describe self-leveling priming products and allow adjustment with Vallejo Airbrush Thinner or Flow Improver. Shake the bottle and follow its current label and safety instructions for surface preparation, thinning, ventilation, cleanup and drying; avoid treating general Mecha color advice as a guarantee for every primer/substrate combination.

On an assembled robot kit, test a hidden area first, especially when coating flexible parts, previously painted plastic, resin, metal or glossy surfaces. Apply controlled light coats that do not fill panel lines. The manufacturer’s documentation discusses resistance after drying, but this article does not assert a universal cure time, required pressure setting or compatibility with every plastic formulation.

Questions before ordering

Is this the final ivory topcoat?

It is marketed as a surface primer, not as a guaranteed one-step finished color or protective varnish. You can choose subsequent Mecha paints based on your intended finish and the manufacturer’s compatibility instructions.

Is 74.643 the same as every Ivory product?

No. Vallejo’s Mecha range chart uses the shade code 70.643 for Ivory, while exact 200 mL shop listings use 74.643. Check the precise label, range and size; similarly named Vallejo paints or other primer bottle sizes are not automatically the same retail item.

Do I need to dilute it?

Vallejo’s published Mecha instructions permit compatible Vallejo thinner/flow improver in the range, but application depends on equipment and conditions. Start with the actual primer-label guidance and test your chosen airbrush setup rather than relying on an invented universal thinning ratio.
